Getting Observations to Research Grade

The percentage of Observations at Research Grade for the Garden Route District is currently 41.5%.
While quantity is good, let us also look at quality and get a healthy 66% of the Observations at Research Grade.
Go to https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/identify?project_id=city-nature-challenge-2024-garden-route to assist in identificatio...

The Scoop on Poop

You may not be able to see tracks in the snow right now, but you may find other evidence that foxes or coyotes are around or have passed through the area.

Below are pictures of coyote and domestic dog scat. The ends of the coyote scat look like they have a pointed twist, but the domestic dog scat doesn't have that same twist.

Coyote scat may be up to 4 inches long and about 3/4 of an inch in diameter (fox scat is approximately half that size). The color of the scat can va...

Please help ID any species in the Seattle-Tacoma Metropolitan Area (including Everett, Seattle, Bellevue, Tacoma and any place within Snohomish, King and Pierce counties) through May 5th

Thank you for posting observations during this bioblitz~

Now please pitch in to help ID for this City Challenge and focus on identifications inside the Seattle Tacoma boundaries for the next few days. Even a couple identifications will help push the count up! Choose your favorite species or one that you know well and work through a batch of them. Find things that don't have a category and put them into something basic like plants, insects, fungi... then people that recognize th...

1500 Observations?!

@mikethebirder has just hit 1500 observations for the CNC!

Will he stop here at this nice, round number? Or is he taking a coffee break as he gets ready to load some more?

Kudos to Mike and to all of you who continue to upload your CNC observations, and to the vast team of identifiers who are trying to keep up with your many observations!

Together, we are certainly a team to be ...

Monthly article #1

Hello everyone, I hope you are all doing very well. This month, we are experimenting for the first time a monthly article, which will bring together interesting data, statistics and the welcoming of the new members of the month. Of course, there are things that will change over time and articles. Do not hesitate if you have ideas for things that could be added, it would help us a lot! All proposals are good to take, even if they look insignificant.

First of all, here are all the ...

Toivottavasti viimeinen lumisade

Riihijärvi heräsi aamulla lumisateeseen. Olen jatkanut vielä lintujen ruokintaa. Linnunsiemeniä on kadonnut kilokaupalla väsyneiden muuttomatkalaisten nokkiin.

Day Seven: The Excitement Continues

Our numbers are pretty stable right now. I think we've added a couple observations and species since yesterday, but I don't expect a huge increase over the next few days. At this point, we're concentrating on increasing our proportion of research quality observations, currently at 37.2%.

I've been scrolling through the observations today, looking for "interesting" ones. Shardintx found Agrobacterium (

Rant about unfairness

Every single day I see animals being abused and neglected. Sometimes, I have to pause and mute my social medias just so I can have peace of mind and bring back sanity. Watching this sad reality again and again, in different stories and format, is so sad and depressing.

I just don't understand why rich people could not do something about. Heck, some of them can afford an island by themselves, so why not donate even 0.1% of their profit to help make this world a better place for th...

Thank you!

Great work on everyone's observations over the weekend! We have surpassed our goal of 10K observations (by a long-shot) and the numbers continue to grow. The deadline to post all of your observations is Midnight May 5. It's a bit of a "soft" deadline as the CNC organizers will be pulling all of the numbers by 9am on May 6. Probably in the afternoon the global results will be announced and we will consider the event complete!

One last thing I would like to ask of all of you is th...

It is a very close race in this year's CNC and we need to press on with all that we have.

We are almost at the finish line and what a challenge it has turned out to be. As of May 02, 2024 the top three Canadian cities are: Vancouver, Montreal and Calgary. The Vancouver MVRD is ranked 40th globally with 13,170 observations. A close second is Montreal ranked 41st globally with 13,144 observations. That is only a difference of 26 observations (or a difference of 0.1%).
The third Canadian city is Calgary but is just under 2,000 observations behind so it looks like a race for ...

Observations Window has closed, but still do some ID and uploading of photos (if you have some taken during the window)

Thank you everyone! Your have really stepped up to help out our region with the CNC 2024!

If you have any more photos, be sure to add them to iNaturalist before May5.

Also, if you have some time, go through and ID some of the observations in our project that haven't been ID'd yet!

We are closing in our Heart of Texas so every photo counts!

Thanks again for getting out there and making some great observations!

Priority Invasive Plants

The Columbia Shuswap Invasive Species Society updated our priority plant lists on April 9 at the annual Land Manager Meeting to guide the inventory, treatment, and monitoring of invasive plants in the region.

Priority Plant Lists
These lists contain six rankings based on how established a species is and their potential impact within the region. In the meeting, hoary cress was discussed as a species to keep at the highest possible alert level, and cheatgrass was highlighted as...

Rappel : Vous pouvez encore participer!

We've got to identify or upload 148 more species to top our species tally from 2019, and then 2024 will with...

Looking after the environment and our people.

It is really important to Australians that we look after our environment. We do not have another planet to go to. I began this project to better understand the environmental impact of the project at Miriam Vale. It is to this end that I ask for help to find species that may be lost or threatened if the project goes ahead.
