The 21 species observed show that gardens with mainly locally indigenous plant play a vital role for local insects, and thereby other wildlife. Endemic Cape Honybees are social, living in wild nests of varying sizes and made-made hives of up to 40,000 bees. All other bees are neo-social or solitary, often making 6-20 cells in wood, twigs, or burrows and placing a small amount of pollen and nectar (or oil), in each cell.
There are approximately 1,200 species of bees in South Africa and most are extremely difficult to identify to species level. An indicative size of each bee is given though sizes vary greatly with each genus.
